Egypt Fire Department P44

P44 is a 1941 Ford. It was Egypts' first truck, purchased in 1946 from a government surplus sale (US Navy). P-44 served Egypt as a first line pumper until 1958. As the department was able to afford additional pumpers, it's first line status was reduced. It remained in service until the mid-70's.

The truck was originally outfitted with a Ford Flat-Head V8 and a matching Compound Low, 3 speed manual shift transmission.

It was necessary to pump with the hood open to prevent over-heating of the engine. The over-heating condition would cause the cylinder heads to crack and render the truck inoperable.

P-44 served out the early portion of it's retirement in a farmer's field. A group of Egypt firefighters mad the decision to restore the vehicle in the late 1970's. The vehicle was repowered and the wood box on the rear was built. This allowed for P-44 to become our parade vehicle. After the vehicle was completed, it was dedicated to Maurice Shur who was the the only surviving charter member of the department.
